The American musician Jimi Hendrix died in London on September 18, 1970, aged 27. In the days leading up to his death, he was in poor health, affected by exhaustion and possibly influenza, and frustrated by his personal relationships. He spent his last day with Monika Dannemann at her apartment in Notting Hill. The next morning, she found him unresponsive, and he was confirmed dead at St Mary Abbot's Hospital. The post-mortem examination concluded that Hendrix had died of asphyxia after choking on his vomit while intoxicated with barbiturates; Dannemann stated that he had taken 18 times his recommended dose of Vesparax. Finding no evidence of suicide, the coroner recorded his death as an open verdict. In 1992, Hendrix's former girlfriend Kathy Etchingham asked the UK authorities to reinvestigate his death; this second investigation again proved inconclusive when it was closed the following year.
